August is a BIG month for kids. A new school year is at hand or barely beginning and it can be a stressful time. New teachers, new classmates and even perhaps a new school building can all be so intimidating. It is also a very exciting time. It is a new beginning full of promise, opportunity and maybe a new backpack. (Which can totally be a big deal for kids, am I right?!) Plus, for many children it is a reunion with friends that they may have missed over the summer.
Either way, one thing is for sure, it is a definite time of transition. When thinking of themes for books that would ease this transition there were a few that really stood-out to me as great/applicable choices. They are: back to school books, kindness and positive attitudes, making friends and being yourself.

Back to school books are an obvious pick. The ones I selected address back to school jitters in multiple perspectives (even one from the school’s perspective!) and are excellent spring-boards for discussion. The books about kindness and positive attitudes are wonderful because the start of a new school year is an ideal time to address these topics with children. My hope is to raise kind and empathetic children and school is one of the places where it can especially make such a difference.
The last topics of making new friends and being yourself are meant to be encouraging and empowering. A couple of the books I selected are especially awesome ones that include some neurodiversity so I hope they touch on empathy and understanding for children as well.
I am really excited to share this list and hope that they help your transition with your littles be a smooth and happy one.

we ADORE the book WE DON’T EAT OUR CLASSMATES. We bought it before a car trip and were delighted to find the main character’s name is Penelope (that’s OUR biggest Dino’s – I mean kid’s – name). It’s so much fun to read and Penelope is just darling.
