The Darkest Dark

hhhh

The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield and The FanBrothers.

Overcoming fears, such as a fear of the dark can be difficult and books, as always, can be a wonderful catalyst for helping your child to overcome such fears.  This book is one that is fantastic for children who are afraid of the dark, not just because it addresses the issue, but relates a true story!  And it isn’t just any true story, it is the story of an actual Canadian astronaut who not only overcame his childhood fear of the dark, but conquered it as he went on to become an explorer of the darkest dark: space.

This story starts when he was a young child in love with the idea of space travel.  Chris would pretend to visit outer space and be brave, but when nighttime came he was afraid and thought there were scary aliens in his room.  His parents tried everything they could to help him overcome his fear, but to no avail.  Then one night Chris got to go to a neighbors home and witness the first lunar landing on T.V.  He found it fascinating and utterly inspiring.  It  helped him not only to overcome his fear of the dark, but to dream big and work towards becoming an astronaut.

This is a fabulous story!  I love that it is inspired by the story of a real astronaut that had a fear that is relatable to children.  However, even children who aren’t afraid of the dark can read this story and gain comfort from his story as well as inspiration from his success.  I love that it includes a photo and section in the end about Chris Hadfield to help children make the connection of the actual man behind the story.  Such a special book!
