“When the World is Dreaming” by Rita Gray and Kenard Pak
Have you ever wondered what animals dream about? Do they dream in color? Do they even dream at all? I wondered this as a small child (I had a lot of pets, so I was curious.) and so do many other children. This book addresses this question in a beautiful and fictional way. It is not meant to be scientific at all, I feel it is meant to be ethereal and calming to render it a wonderful bedtime story. Which, in my opinion, it most definitely is.
It is set-up with a nature adoring child who observes animals outside who are sleeping or preparing to sleep and poses the question “what do you dream about?”. The charming part is that after she poses this question with each animal a new text is used in a handwritten font to represent the animal “answering her” and explaining what they dream about. And oh, they have the most delightful little dreams! The snake, for example, dreams that he is flying as a kite and his long body is the string trailing behind. The creativity in this book is perfect and the illustrations are nothing short of dreamy. Definitely one to add to your bedtime story stack.
