As I am compiling this list it happens to be an election year so kids’ curiosity about voting and how elections work is at an all-time high. I went off on a search for the best children’s books about this topic that I could find to help educate the future voters of America.
However, voting and elections is a pertinent topic all year and every year. Understanding how elections work is an important part of being a good citizen and is something every child should learn. So whatever year it is as you are reading this, election or not, I hope you find this book list helpful in preparing the future voters in your life.

Vote for Our Future! by Margaret McNamara and Micah Player- I love this upbeat and inspiring book. It is a story about a group of children in a town who want to do their part for the upcoming election. They are too young to vote, but they aren’t too young to make their voices heard and to help encourage voters to hit the polls and vote for their future.
If I Ran For President by Cathering Stier and Lynne Avril- This book is a great introduction to presidential elections because it covers everything including caucuses, campaign trails and more. It also introduces a lot of great vocabulary on the topic to children.
Duck for President (A Click Clack Book) by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin- This book is a bit more silly and entertaining than the others on the list, but it does still point out the responsibility that comes with being elected as well as the government official hierarchy from town mayor all the way up to president.
Grace for President (Grace Series, 1) by Kelly DiPucchio and LeUyen Pham- This fun book tells the story of a little girl who is inspired to run for class president at her school when she learns that our nation has yet to experience a female president. It is also a great introduction for teaching kids how the voting system works.
We Disagree by Bethanie Deeney Murguia- This book is a simple, yet effective, one that points out that even though people may disagree with each other on different topics, it doesn’t mean that they can’t get along and even be friends. An important and needed reminder in the topic of elections and voting.
A Vote Is a Powerful Thing by Catherine Stier and Courtney Dawson- In this story a schoolroom of children learn about how powerful votes can be and then they use their influence to help campaign on behalf of the wilderness reserve in their town in hopes to save it through the voters. A wonderful introduction to the power of votes.
The Next President: The Unexpected Beginnings and Unwritten Future of Americas President by Kate Messner and Adam Rex- This book is phenomenal. It highlights each president of the United States in a way that features where upcoming presidents were at in their lives while select presidents were serving in office. It really gets you thinking where the next presidents of the future are now and what they are doing.
Lililans Vote by Jonah Winter and Shane W. Evans- This one is powerful! It follows the history of black people gaining their right to vote in a heartbreaking and impactful timeline of one woman’s life/heritage. It demonstrates the heart and work that went into giving everyone the right to vote (as well as the unfair injustices surrounding it in the past) and how it should be respected and treasured.
I Voted: Making a Choice Makes a Difference by Mark Shulman and Serge Bloch- This a great introduction to how the voting process works in America that starts with something simple like “voting” for a favorite ice cream flavor to how the president gets chosen. It breaks-down the complicated process in an approachable way for children.
Equality’s Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America by Deborah Diesen and Magdalena Mora- I really love this one! It follows the history of voting rights in America and how it started with wealthy, white land owners until it finally encompassed everyone. The process is highlighted well and I love the repeating line that “a right’s not a right until it is available to all.”
When You Grow Up to Vote: How Our Government Works for You by Eleanor Roosevelt and Michelle Markel- It’s a book written by Eleanor Roosevelt!! This new edition is over 70 pages of explaining how our democracy works. It covers everything from voting, laws, the White House and more. Such a great introduction to being an informed citizen of the United States and I am so excited to see it reprinted!
