For some reason Halloween time just gets more and more fun for me every year. I love putting my children’s costumes together, decorating the house, playing our Halloween playlist and reading Halloween books. This year we are so excited that we already have started on each one of those and it isn’t even October yet! But, when Halloween books are this good and kids are this excited can you blame me?
Below are 10+ Halloween books that are new to us that we are loving right now. Each one would make a fun addition to your Halloween collection and are sure to get you ready for the “spookiest time of year.”

“Sir Simon” by Cale Atkinson- Sir Simon is a professional ghost, which is a lot of fun, but it means a lot of ghost chores. You know, like moving your possessions around and making the attic creak. However, one day he makes a new human friend who wants to help him out. Could it get any more fun?
“Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein” by Linda Bailey and Julia Sandra- This is a picture book biography about the author of Frankenstein and the story behind the story. The illustrations are intricate, gorgeous and just the right amount of spooky. Plus, the story is so interesting. I really enjoy this one.
“Stumpkin” by Lucy Ruth Cummins- Stumpkin is a pumpkin who is missing his stem and is worried that because of it he won’t be picked at the pumpkin stand by someone to become a jack-o-lantern. Things look pretty bleak for a bit, but the happy resolution is purely delightful. Stumpkin has stolen our hearts and now my kids are excited everytime they see a pumpkin without a stem.
“The Widow’s Broom” by Chris Van Allsburg- This book is a beloved Halloween classic that I remember being read aloud to me as a child! This edition is the 25th anniversary edition and it is just beautiful. I am so excited to pass on the tradition of reading it with my kids.
“Bone Soup:A Spooky, Tasty Tale” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Tom Knight- This fun Halloween book is a Halloween spin on a retelling of “stone soup” and comes complete with an actual recipe in the back. It is such a fun book about the power of community and how we all have more when we share.
“Midnight Monsters: A Pop-Up Shadow Search” by Helen Friel- This book isn’t really a story, but incredible pop-ups that you look through in the dark with a flashlight. When you do there are some pretty awesome shadows that show up on your wall and moving the flashlight slowly from side-to-side reveals all the Halloween monsters that you are searching for. It is SO COOL!
“Five Little Pumpkins” and “Five Little Pumpkins Came Back” by Dan Yaccarino- My kids are in love with the song “Five Little Pumpkins” so the first book here is an obvious hit with them. However, we are also super excited that now there is a second verse to the song with “Five Little Pumpkins Came Back”. We are well on our way to memorizing this one too now and it is just as cute as the first one.
Halloween Trick or Treat: A Colors Book by Lydia Nichols- This Halloween themed colors primer has the most darling design and seriously cute illustrations that feature kids in fun costumes. One of the best little Halloween board books ever!
“Go To Sleep Little Creep” by David Quinn and Ashley Spires- This Halloween bedtime story features different Halloween monsters and creatures as they put their little “creeps” to bed. It is so cute and sure to delight little bookworms.
“Fright School” by Janet Lawler and Chiara Galletti- Fright School is where all the Halloween monsters go to learn how to be spooky for Halloween. It is a creative and fun book, but what really sold me was the surprise ending and the cute illustration that accompanies it. You will have to read it to see for yourself.
“Lots of Cats” by E. Dee Taylor- This book is absolutely darling and is a new Halloween favorite for sure. It is about a nice little witch who is lonely so she brews up a potion for a friend. She is rewarded with lots of cat friends who make her life so much more fun. It is a sweet and charming one.
“Pumpkin Countdown” by Joan Holub and Jan Smith- This book is newly available in paperback and is so much fun for Halloween. Technically it isn’t necessarily a “Halloween” book, but it is all about a school trip to a pumpkin patch. Visiting a pumpkin patch is a Halloween tradition of ours, as I’m sure it is for many of you too, so it made it on this list. Besides, who doesn’t love a pumpkin counting book?!
“Five Silly Ghosts” by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Hilli Kushnir- A board book, ghost version of the “Five Little Pumpkins” classic song with sparkly gitter?! Count us in! It’s SO cute!
“Skelly’s Halloween” by David Martin and Lori Richmond- In this adorable tale Skelly the skeleton is broken apart and needs some very special friends to help put him together again. Skelly is SO likable and the story is one that is sure to please.
“Monster Boogie” by Laurie Berkner and Ben Clantoon- So, strictly speaking, this book isn’t a Halloween one either. But who doesn’t love a good monster book at Halloween?! This one is the lyrics to Laurie Berkner’s fabulous song “Monster Boogie” illustrated and it is so fun to sing along too. Especially in October…
“10 Busy Brooms” by Carole Gerber and Michael Fleming- This Halloween counting board book is so adorable and so much fun! IT starts with one witch on an extra large brooms who invites more and more witches to ride until a light-hearted conclusion has them all taking a different route.
“Happy Halloween! (A Changing Faces Book)”– This board book is magical! With the turn of each page faces in illustrations magical change! The movement feature is so neat and my kids have had me read it to them a million times. Genius!
