Ever since I was a child I have always been a HUGE cat fan, so I am so thrilled that my daughter is turning out to be one as well. She loves our pet cat and likes to “play cat” on occasion as well. Cats and dogs are pretty popular in the world of children and I don’t know if that’s because they are so prevalent in the pet world or if it is something more. Either way there are oodles of fantastic books featuring them and they make for some fun pretend play. Today we are sharing seven of our favorite books that feature cats (mostly new and a couple old) along with a cat, pretend play costume set from Opposite of Far that is just darling! We hope you enjoy!
Opposite of Far Cat Costume
*I received this costume set in exchange for sharing my thoughts. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
We have been long-time fans of Opposite of Far costume accessories so when I was thinking of pairing our cat book list with a pretend play item I immediately thought of them. We reached out and they were happy to send a set over and my daughter and I are thrilled! The set includes some pink cat ears that tie on with a ribbon like a headband, a tail that is worn around the waist with elastic and paws that slip on like mittens. They are made primarily of felt and the quality is wonderful! One of my favorite parts about Opposite of Far sets is that they fit a wide range of kids and are sure to last for years.
My daughter is absolutely crazy about this set and it is so cute how excited she gets about wearing it. It is especially fun to pair it with her favorite cat books because reading them definitely gets her excited about playing “cat”. Don’t you just love book inspired play and book and toy pairings? Also, as a side note, they have SO many different costume sets available in addition to cats! Head on over to check it out!

10+ of our Favorite Cat Books
There are so many cute cat books coming out right now and I am so excited to share our favorites with you! Because I plan to keep adding to this list as we discover new favorites (and there are already quite a few here) so I will keep my notes on them super brief. However, do know that we have read every single one of them (Probably dozens of times! Lol!) and truly do love them or they wouldn’t be included below. Enjoy!
“Cat Wishes” by Calista Brill and Kenard Pak- A cat is granted three wishes and through a fun twist of events they happen to line up with the wishes of a future companion.
“Kat Writes a Song” by Greg Foley- Kat writes a song that seems to bring good will and joy everywhere she goes.
“I Don’t Know What to Call my Cat” by Simon Philip and Ella Bailey- Picking a name for a pet can be incredibly hard, especially if it’s a picky cat!
“Kitten’s First Full Moon” by Kevin Henkes- A classic that our family is head-over-heels for because it is just so darling.
“I Hate My Cats (A Love Story)” by Davide Cali and Anna Pirolli (Available October 2nd)- Anyone else have a love/hate relationship with their cat? I totally do!
“Mommies are Amazing” by Meredith Costain and Polona Lovsin- This one is about moms, but is full of the most darling cat illustrations on every single page.
“The Very Fluffy Kitty, Papillon” by A. N. Kang- A kitty so fluffy that it floats. What’s not to love?!
“If You Give a Cat a Cupcake” by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond- We love every single book in this series and this cat version is no different!
“Cat Nap” by Toni Yuly- Cat just wants to sleep, but kitten wants to play. How will the two resolve this dilema?
“Spot, The Cat” by Henry Cole- A clever search and find book with a cute little plot and detailed illustrations that are wonderful.
“Archie Snufflekins Oliver Valentine Cupcake Tiberius Cat” by Katie Harnett- You know that cat in your neighborhood that everyone seems to have claimed? This book is about him!
“They All Saw a Cat” by Brendan Wenzel- A genius book about perspective with incredible illustrations, all centered around a cat.
“Skippyjon Jones” by Judy Schachner- This is one of the first picture book series that I fell in love with as an adult. We love this cat!

Our kids like to be cats too! Have you ever heard the song “What kind of cat are you” by Billy Jonas? It’s definitely worth looking up. Pretty funny stuff especially if it’s the version with the really deadpan delivery from the kids answering his questions.
