Being a newly independent reader is a very exciting time and you want young children to experience as much success as possible to help them enjoy reading and continue to develop their reading skills. Choosing books that are difficult enough to challenge them, yet simple enough that they can have success on their own is very important. However, I feel it is equally important that the books are fun and appealing to help reading be enjoyable and to help create lifelong readers from the very beginning.
This collection of books is ten book series that I feel are both perfect for newly independent readers and entertaining. Because these are all series this list represents many wonderful books that are available for reading enjoyment!
The criteria for the books on this list (other than being positively awesome ) is that they be graphic novels that are less than 100 pages. (Most of them are around 70 pages, but the range is from 32 to 96 pages). These books are also focused on the 4-10 year old crowd with 6-9 probably being the main “sweet spot”.
For your reference, after the title and author of each book I have listed how many pages it is and what age group it is recommended. I also sorted them loosely by recommended age from youngest to oldest based on their listed, geared audience. I hope you find this list useful as well as lots of fun.

“Moby Shinobi: Ninja at the Pet Shop” by Luke Flowers-32 pages, 4-6 year olds, series
Moby Shinobi is trying to help at a pet shop, but a bit of chaos ensues through the effort. Everything gets put back to rights in the end and it is a silly and fun book. It is definitely the easiest read of the books on this list.
“Hello Hedgehog: Do you Like my Bike?” by Norm Feuti- 48 pages, 4-6 year olds, series
This book is an easy and quick read story. Hedgehog has a new bike and wants to go bike riding with Harry, but Harry is reluctant. Hedgehog soon finds out why and is understanding and supportive of their friend. This book is loaded with cuteness.
“Nugget and Dog” by Jason Tharp- 64 pages, 5-7 year olds, series
This book makes a great introduction to graphic novels as it is easy to read and has a couple of pages at the beginning that give a brief introduction on how to read graphic novels. The characters in this book are extra sweet and extra kind.
“Pizza and Taco: Who’s the Best?” by Stephen Shaskan- 72 pages, 4-9 year olds, series
Choose this one for a silly and fun book that is light on text and completely enjoyable. In the story the two friends try to figure out who is best only to realize later that they both have different strengths.
“Peanut, Butter, and Crackers: Puppy Problems” by Paige Braddock- 96 pages, 6-9 year olds, series
This series is silly and is sure to have little ones giggling. In this book we have Crackers and Butter who are very content together until a new puppy named Peanut enters their life and turns it upside down. At first they are frustrated, but they soon learn to adjust and accept their new friend.
“Haylee and Comet: A Tale of Cosmic Friendship” by Deborah Marker- 72 pages, 6-9 year olds, series
I really love the creativity and originality of this series! In this book we are introduced to Haylee and Comet and how they become friends. It is broken up into a few, little stories that are charming and teach about accepting differences and the ways of friendship. I also love the color palette and illustrations.
“Sir Ladybug” by Corey R. Tabor – 72 pages, 6-10 year olds, series
I LOVE this one! It is cute and clever and a joy to read. In the story Sir Ladybug and his friends take on the task of saving a caterpillar from a bird who wants to eat them. With a rolly polly bug and a snail (with a shell with a luxurious inside) as sidekicks, this book is unlike any other.
“Stick and Stone on the Go” by Beth Ferry and Kristen Celia- 96 pages, 6-10 year olds, series
This series features a small group of friends that are simply darling and includes pinecone who is kind of mean sometimes, kind of grumpy, and often on the outskirts. I love the lessons on kindness and friendship and think this series will go great places. It is a bit longer than the others on this list, but it isn’t heavy on the text.
“Beak and Ally: Unlikely Friends” by Norm Feuti- 64 pages, 6-10 year olds, series
Ally is an alligator who thinks they are perfectly happy being alone when Beak moves in the tree nearby. At first, Ally is frustrated and unsure about the new company, however the two become fast friends. This one has bright and playful illustrations and its wonderful.
“Pepper & Boo: A Cat Surprise” by Charise Mericle Harper- 64 pages, 6-10 year olds, series
This is a cute, little book where a cat and two dogs have trouble understanding each other at first, despite good intentions all around. It is definitely on the light end of text amount and is quick and fun.
