Welcoming a new baby into a family is super exciting and definitely something to celebrate. However, it also includes some transitioning for everyone, including older siblings. These books in this book list are definitely ones of a celebratory nature. A couple of them (Angelina’s Baby Sister and I Used to Be Famous) feature some of the struggles that older siblings may have transitioning, but they are done in a way that fosters understanding and keeps a positive message. There are even a couple of books (A Crazy-Much Love and The Day of Your Arrival) that are excellent for adoptive parents. These are books that I feel would make excellent baby shower gifts or even older sibling gifts as you prepare to welcome a new baby or you have friends who are preparing for one.

A Crazy-Much Love by Joy Jordan-Lake and Sonia Sánchez- This book is an endearing one that focuses on the love between parents and children and the joy they share as they celebrate milestones together. It is also a great one for the topic of adoption or celebrating multicultural families.
You Are New by Lucy Knisley- This book is a lovely celebration of how new babies are and all they have ahead of them to experience and discover as well as celebrating all the growth in their future. It’s one that makes mamas like me who think childhood passes too quickly tear up. (In a good way.)
Angelina’s Baby Sister by Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig – We love Angelina and this book is no exception. In this story Angelina is super excited about the arrival of her new baby sister. However, when the baby comes Angelina struggles with the transition at first because she feels overlooked due to how much attention the baby is getting. However, that is soon resolved as she realizes that her love from her family for her hasn’t changed and she realizes the positives of having a baby sister.
Bobo and the New Baby by Rebecca Minhsuan Huang- Older sibling aren’t the only ones who adjust to new babies, pets like dogs have a transition period too. This book is one for all the dog lovers out there and is a playful take on the transition they may face. It’s darling and sure to make fur baby parents smile.
The Day of Your Arrival (Egalité) by Dolores Brown and Reza Dalvand- This book focuses on the anticipation of new babies and the love that parents can’t wait to share for them. It shows the preparation that happens before families grow and the space available and tenderly waiting for a new member of the family. This book is also excellent for adoptive families and is so sweet.
Mama’s Belly by Kate Hosford and Abigail Halpin- This gorgeously illustrated book features a family that is preparing to add another child to the mix. It shows not only the sweet relationship growing between them and their unborn baby, but the tender relationship of the mom and the older child as they prepare together.
Juniper Kai: Super Spy by Laura Gehl and Alexandria Neonakis- In this book Juniper Kai notices some strange things happening and goes on a super spy mission to get to the bottom of it. She soon learns that the surprise is a new baby will be joining the family and it is super cute. One that is sure to make older siblings smile and could be a fun way to announce a new baby to them.
World So Wide by Alison McGhee and Kate Alizadeh- This book is a beautiful love letter from parents to child of how there is so much beauty in the world that they are thrilled to share with their new addition to their family. It is sweet and tender and beautifully illustrated.
Little Big Girl by Claire Keane- This book features an older sister who is building a sibling relationship with a new little brother and it is the absolute cutest. It is done with a very postive vibe and focuses on the joyful and caring aspects fo being an older sibling. Love!
I Used to Be Famous by Becky Cattier, Tara Luebbe and Joanne Lew-Vriethoff- In this book an older sister is struggling at fist with a new baby sister because she feels like she has lost her “fame” or that she is being overlooked for the new baby. However, she soon learns the sweet rewards of sharing the spotlight and how much fun it can be to have a partner and friend in a new sibling.
We Are Brothers, We Are Friends by Alexandra Penfold and Eda Kaban- This is another incredibly positive and tender book that features a new sibling relationship. In this book two brothers celebrate the benefits of having a sibling and it is purely adorable.
How Big Is Baby? by Kirsten Hall and Aki- This board book is an excellent one for older siblings when a mom is in the pregnancy stage. It shows the growth of their new sibling with their size being related to the size of fruits and vegetables and can be fun for helping to include older siblings in preparing for baby to come. It’s really well done and the flaps are a neat feature.
