We LOVE Halloween books over here. They are second pretty much only to Christmas books. We love ones featuring jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, costumes, trick-or-treating and more. However, we do definitely prefer our Halloween books on the cute side and shy away from anything too spooky or creepy. Below are a dozen of our favorite Halloween books that feature the fun side of the season. We hope that you love them as much as we do!

Picture Books
The Little Kitten (My Little Animal Friend) by Nicola Killen- In this story a young girl in a black cat costume finds a lost black kitten and helps it find it’s way home to what may or may not be a witches cottage. It is adorable and perfect for Halloween.
Cookie Boo by Ruth Paul- Have you ever wondered what Halloween cookies do in their tin when you aren’t looking? Well perhaps they except for a little Halloween adventuring before sneaking back home before you notice. This story seems to think so and why not?
Gustavo, the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago- This one is technically a Dia De Los Muertos book, but it is also a fun read for Halloween time. It is about a ghost who wants friends badly and finally decides to take a leap of courage to “put himself out there” in hopes of gaining friend or two. It’s very sweet.
Frankenstein Doesn’t Wear Earmuffs! by John Loren- This story goes out to all the kids who are not thrilled about wearing cold weather clothing over their awesome Halloween costumes. A necessary evil it would seem. It’s hilarious and one for all ages to enjoy and get a giggle from.
Where’s Waldo? Spooky Spotlight Search by Martin Hanford- Who doesn’t love Waldo, right?! And this Waldo book has spooky scenes for you to search through and it uses the spotlight format where you slip a cardboard “torch” (that comes with the book) under a dark film to illuminate as you look. So cool!
Ghost Afraid of the Dark by Alex Wilmore and Sara Corway- Ghost is afraid of the dark, but with a little help from his friends he learns to see it in a new way and discovers a side of himself that he didn’t know was there. It’s adorable and has such a great message.
The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason and Byron Eggenschwiler- This is one that is sure to tug at your heartstrings. It’s about a little ghost who is made out of a heavy quilt instead of a sheet like all their family and friends. They are discouraged about being different until it affords them a wonderful experience that they wouldn’t have had otherwise. A beautiful celebration of diversity.
Pumpkin Island by Arthur Geisert- This is a the tale of an island that gets flooded with pumpkin vines one year and how they use the pumpkins and celebrate with them. It is refreshingly unique and different and my kids and I love the idea of an island full of pumpkins at Halloween time. Such a good one.
Bears and Boos by Shirley Parenteau and David Walker- This adorable Halloween book features some little bears as they prepare for Halloween by dressing up. They teach a little lesson on sharing as they do and it couldn’t be cuter.
Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht and Jarvis- This lyrical book is a lovely tribute to the Halloween season and features many favorite fall activities including picking a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch. It is beautifully illustrated as well.
I Love My Fangs! by Kelly Leigh Miller- This is a silly story about a young vampire who is distraught when he looses his first tooth because it is one of his fangs and he is rather attached to them. Things get worse when a tooth fairy shows up and wants to take it! However, it does have a happy resolution that is sure to make you smile.
The Spooky Haunted House: A Pop-Up Adventure by Joel Stern, Christopher Lee and Nancy Hall- The kid in me will always adore a good pop-up book and this one is no exception. You take a little tour through a fun, haunted house through it’s pages and it feels spookily magical.
Board Books
Trick or Treat Songs (Halloween Interactive Children’s Take Along Song Book with 5 Sing-Along Tunes) by Rosa Von Feder and Josh Cleland- This board book has a fun take-along handle and darling illustrations, but the best part is the text is five Halloween songs and the buttons play all the music you need to sing them with. We love singing with this one!
One Black Cat by Robbie Rogge and August Ro- This board book looks adorable on the shelf! It is in the shape of a black cat and has a cute little “latch” and everything. There are only a few illustrations/pages and the text is sparse, but the whole thing couldn’t be any cuter!
Funny Little Ghost: A Halloween Story Board Book by Rosa Von Feder and Mackenzie Haley- The cutest little board book about a ghost who can’t settle on a costume choice until they realize that they are more prepared for trick-or-treating than they previously thought. It couldn’t be cuter!
