Rainy days are my favorite. Reading books is my favorite. Combining rainy days with reading is an ULTIMATE favorite! It’s true. What is better than cuddling up with a fuzzy blanket and a stack of books on a rainy day? Almost nothing. Below is a list of over a dozen picture books that we love for rainy day reading. Hello, Rain! by Kyo Maclear and Chris Turnham- This is one of the most joyful and bright celebratory books that I have seen for a rainy day. It makes me smile just looking through it.
Sunday Rain by Rosie J. Pova and Amariah Rauscher- In this story it is playing outside in the rain that helps a young child who has newly moved into a neighborhood make friends.
Where Do They Go When It Rains? by Gerda Muller- In this story young children want to know where animals go when it rains and how it effects them. It is a sweet book and is great for inquisitive minds.
My Rainy Day Rocket Ship by Markette Sheppard and Charly Palmer- In this story a young boy spends a rainy day inside making a cardboard box rocket ship and engaging in imaginative play.
Jonas Hanway’s Scurrilous, Scandalous, Shockingly Sensational Umbrella by Josh Crute and Eileen Ryan Ewen- In this story we learn the history of how Jonas Hanway popularized umbrellas in Europe. It is so interesting!
Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson- This interactive book is perfect for springtime and featuring how rain helps flowers grow and the world turn green.
The Littlest Family’s Big Day by Emily Winfield Martin- This darling book tells the story of a little family of bears that are new in a neighborhood and tells about their “big” and rainy day.
Evie and the Strawberry Patch Rescue (Evie the Strawberry Fairy, 1) by Stefanie Dahle- Evie has a problem. The rain is flooding her home and her strawberry patch. However, with a little help from her friends things turn out okay.
Good Night, Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry- Little Blue Truck, ever the faithful friend, is their for the barnyard animals during a frightful thunderstorm. It is the cutest.
Cat’s Colours (Child’s Play Library) by Airlie Anderson- On a grey and rainy day cat heads out to collect colors. The best part is the surprise ending when we see what happened to all the colors that she collected.
Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco- A grandmother. helps a grandchild brave out a storm by baking a chocolate “thunder cake” together. This book is a very favorite of mine. Plus, it comes with a recipe!
Come Home Already! by Jory John and Benji Davies- Bear has headed out for a little fishing trip on his own. However, things don’t quite go as planned when the rain comes and duck misses him too much.
A Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman- An older and wonderful story about a child who goes out searching for a rainbow of their own on a rainy day.
The Bear in the Boat by Owen Hart and Caroline Pedler- Bear is someone that everyone in his forest community looks up to. So, when a big rainstorm starts to flood their homes, they run to bear for help.
