Like many of you, we have a huge love for Christmas books! We can hardly wait to bring them out every season and we read as many as we can as often as we can from whenever we bring them out in November through mid January. Among our favorite holiday books are a few books about the story of the Nativity of Jesus Christ. This story is very important to our family and our Christmas celebrations and I especially love sharing it with my kids during the holiday season. Below are some of our absolute favorite books about the Nativity that are beautiful in so many ways. We hope you find some new favorites to help your family celebrate this magical time of year.

“Silent Night” by Lara Hawthorne- This is an illustrated book for the lyrics of Silent Night. It is gorgeously illustrated and includes the story behind the song at the back of the book.
“The Christmas Story” by Robert Sabuda- This one has the most incredible pop-up scenes that are just breathtaking. A beautiful one to add to any collection.
“A Savior is Born: Rocks Tell the Story of Christmas” by Patti Rokus- Modern, simple, clean design and utterly creative illustrations this one is beautiful! The story is told in short phrases and is accompanied by scripture references.
“The Tale of Three Trees: A Traditional Folktale” by Angela Elwell Hunt and Tim Jonk- This classic is a bestseller for a reason. It is a fictional fable of three trees: one that becomes the “crib” for baby Jesus, one a boat that he rides in and one the cross. Not exactly a story of the Nativity, but a great Christian book for Christmastime.
“The Christmas Star from Afar” by Natalie Ard- This is a wooden Nativity and tradition activity idea combined with a book that ties them together. The tradition/game consists of hiding the star from the nativity each morning and letting the wiremen “follow” it throughout the season. Plus, the nativity is beautiful!
“The Christmas Story” by Jane Werner Watson and Eloise Wilkin- This Golden Book is a classic and it does such a simple and lovely job of telling the biblical version of the Nativity.
“This First Christmas Night” by Laura Godwin and William Low- This bird book rendition is absolutely beautiful! I also love the simple and poetic way that the story is written.
“Make and Play Nativity” by Joey Chou- This isn’t so much a book (because there is no text) as it is a punch-out, cardboard nativity that you can quickly create and display. I love the design of this nativity so much, along with it’s excellent quality materials, that I have it displayed on our bookshelf!
Board Books
“The Story of Christmas” by Helen Dardik- The bright illustrations in this one are so eye catching for the youngest bookworms and we really enjoy this copy.
“My Christmas Tree Story” by Mary Manz Simon and Gavin Scott- This board book uses symbolism from the Christmas tree and ornaments to tell the story of the Nativity and helps children remember the Nativity when they look at their own tree. So sweet!
“Silent Night: A Light and Sound Book” by Smart Kids Publishing, David Mead and Chris Sharp- This is an illustrated book to the lyrics of Silent Night. It also plays the music for you to sing along too and has lights throughout all the page spreads. A huge hit.
“The Tiny Star: The Greatest Star the World Has Ever Seen” by Arthur Ginolfi and Pat Schories- This charming story is about a little star who wants to shine as big and bright as the other stars. It has the sweetest ending where it finds itself honored to be the star to shine brightly over the manger in Bethlehem.
“Lift the Flap Nativity” by Allia Zobel-Nolan and Trace Moroney- My kids love all the flaps to lift on each page spread in this book and I love that it talks a little about the events leading up to Christ’s birth and has scripture references to match the text.
