My youngest is preschool age and with Summer around the corner I wanted to pull out a bunch of fun preschool concept books for our feature shelves so we could work on the basics together at home. I had so much fun compiling this selection. They include books that teach the alphabet, counting, opposites, colors and more. Each one is phenomenal and lots of fun. Plus, the list includes board books and picture books because at this age I prefer that my kids mostly handle board books because they are still perfecting the art of caring for picture books. I hope that you and your young kiddos enjoy these books as well as they give you a little extra practice whether for preschool or in preparation of preschool.

Picture Books
Alphabet Kingdom by Staria Michelle Halfmann- This is a gorgeous oversized book where each page features a beautifully artistic letter of the alphabet and an animal from the animal kingdom. That’s it. It works as beautifully designed flashcards in a way.
Count Your Chickens by Jo Ellen Bogart and Lori Joy Smith- This counting book is so fun! There are so many chickens on each page to count and there is a search-and-find counting challenge section in the back.
Tiger Days: A Book of Feelings by M.H. Clark and Anna Hurley- This book about feelings and emotional awareness is especially perfect for preschool age in my opinion. It is simple, effective and relatable. Love it.
Cat’s Colors (Child’s Play Library) by Airlie Anderson- This book is the darling story of a cat who soaks up some bright colors on a dreary, gray day. The surprise ending is sure to delight.
My Color Is Rainbow by Agnes Hsu and Yuliya Gwilym- This book features all the colors of the rainbow while also bringing home the message that we aren’t defined by just one or two characteristics.
Counting with Barefoot Critters by Teagan White- This counting book couldn’t be any cuter. The woodland animals are darling and it is a lovely take on a classic counting book format.
Adventures with Barefoot Critters by Teagan White- This ABC book is another beautiful book that is a more traditional format for an alphabet book and features one letter for each page. We adore it.
I Know Numbers! by Taro Gomi- This book isn’t so much about counting, as it is about introducing different types of numbers and where numbers can be found. Perfect for adding another dimension of number sense for preschoolers.
Double Take! A New Look at Opposites by Susan Hood and Jay Fleck- An adorable opposite book that adults will enjoy as much as children. I know that we do over here!
One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller by Kate Read- This one is a fun twist on counting books because of the clever and shocking ending. It has a dramatic climax that adds a lot of fun to classic counting books.
One Is a Piñata by Roseanne Greenfield Thong and John Parra- I love this cultural twist on a classic counting book. Teach my child about another culture while also practicing our numbers? Yes, please!
The Right Number of Elephants by Jeff Sheppard and Felicia Bond- This book is a favorite from my childhood and I am so pleased that I get to share it with my children. Passing on favorite books is the best!
The Zoo’s Grand Opening by Judith Drews- This alphabet book is pretty basic, but feels fresh and interesting. You get to read as an alphabetical array of animals join the zoo for it’s grand opening. The zookeepers are our favorite part of the book!
Board Books
A to Z Menagerie by Suzie Ultman- This hefty little board book has pull out tabs and letters that you can trace with your fingers. The font of the letters is pretty modern so it makes recognizing the letters a little more challenging, which I don’t mind for a step-up in practicing from more basic font alphabet books.
One Lonely Fish by Andy Mansfield and Thomas Flintham- This is another counting book with a dramatic climax and a purely delightful surprise ending. We have read it about a zillion times and laughed over and over.
The World-Famous Book of Counting by Sarah Goodreau- This book is phenomenal when it comes to it’s pop up features. The “wow” factor makes it a super fun counting book.
A B See by Elizabeth Doyle- I love the search-and-find aspect of this alphabet book as you search for items on each page that start with the featured letter. Lots of fun.
Alphablock (An Abrams Block Book) by Christopher Franceschelli- The hefty board books in the “block series” from Abrams are wonderful and this book is no exception. It is one of our absolute favorites and couldn’t be any simpler. Another one that is like flash cards in book format.
Alphabet Street by Jonathan Emmett and Ingela P Arrhenius- This is one of my favorite board books of all time. It pulls-out accordion style into a whole city street where each letter gets it’s own little feature and flap to lift in store windows and more. So creative and charming.
Flora and the Chicks by Molly Idle- We love the whole Flora series. In this one Flora is coining baby chicks as they hatch. Simple concept, large sturdy flaps and a sophisticated design.
