“What on earth are you going to do with a pack of gum? Of course. Why didn’t I think of that? Quick! Run for it!”
A Beginner’s Guide to Bear Spotting by Michelle Robinson and David Roberts
If you are looking for a book that breaks the mold for typical picture books, this one is it! It is an absolutely unique book written and illustrated with a playful sense of humor. It is about a little boy who heads out into the forest to go bear spotting and runs into, not one, but two bears!
As the reader, you essentially get to read/talk directly to our little friend who is out on a mission to spot a bear. It is a lot of fun to read out the warnings and advice and watch his response. One of my favorite parts is when our friend, in a desperate attempt to ward off the bears, pulls out a pack of gum. The reader responds through the text by saying “What on earth are you going to do with a pack of gum?”. What he does with it is surprising as well as effective.
This is a book what will entertain not only the young readers, but older readers as well. My husband and I find ourselves equally amused by it’s antics and it will have you wanting to read it again and again. David Robert’s illustration are also incredibly fun. He used mainly a bold “autumn” color palette and the expressions on the little boy and bears are perfect. This is one that I would definitely recommend.
