“I Feel Teal” by Lauren Rille and Aimee Sicuro
I find it fascinating how psychologically different colors match better with different emotions, don’t you? This is a book that celebrates the many different emotions we feel through color association. My favorite part about color association with emotions for kids is that it gives them a way to identify emotions in a simple way which is wonderful because emotions are such an abstract topic and can be hard for children to express.
The text in this book is simple and points out hat we are a colorful array of all emotions and is a lovely little celebration. The illustrations are also absolutely darling. I just love Aimee’s style and this book is definitely a new favorite!

Abstract “Emotion” Painting
As mentioned above, I love that color association with emotions helps give children a way to identify them. Painting with these colors to show an emotion is also an easy and wonderful way to teach children to express emotion. After reading this book and discussing the different colors and emotions you can lead a discussion about how you can use color through painting to convey emotion. Then, let them try it out! All you need are an inexpensive canvas (or paper) some paints and a brush. Let them experiment with colors and see if they can convey how they are feeling through them.
After their masterpiece is done it would also be a wonderful idea to have them share their painting with you or someone else and explain it. This exercise helps them practice putting their feelings into words while using their painting as a tool. Perfect right? After all, expressing how we feel with words can be hard for an entire lifetime and the more practice children get the more comfortable it can become for them to talk about their feelings.
The painting below is one that is meant to represent happiness. Can you tell? Bright “happy” colors were used and were attempted to be painted in a “burst of joy”. There are so many ways to try and paint emotions and I hope that you and your kiddos have fun experimenting with it!
