Adventures with Barefoot Critters: An ABC Book by Teagan White

“Delightful” and “charming”. Those are the two words that stand out in my mind in relation to this book.  Seriously, completely, totally and absolutely delightful.  I know what your thinking, there are so many ABC books out there, what makes this one so special?!  Well, you’re right, there are a ton of ABC books out there.  But, let me tell you why this one is definitely special.

For starters, just look at that cover!  The inside illustrations are equally incredible and create a magical and playful world.  I love all of the earthy tones and I appreciate every tiny little detail that Teagan added.  I especially love all the textures she creates!  I am a huge fan of textures and patterns galore in illustrations and this book definitely fills my heart in that category.

There is so much going on with the structure of this book, it is not just your typical ABC’s.  There is the typical organization to start where each page features a letter and that letter is big and beautiful before the text of the page.  But the text itself is clever.  Teagan used unique words for the alphabet that are bold to draw attention to them and she coupled the letters up into rhyming phrases.  That’s right, they rhyme!  Plus, this book starts off in January and goes through the entire year while highlighting the seasons (with activities commonly done in that season) and a few holidays.  It’s all packed in there in a way that doesn’t feel forced and has a nice flow.  Let’s just say I’m one of Teagan White’s new biggest fans!
