” Almost a full moon. Let’s make some soup ’cause the weathers getting cold.”
Almost a Full Moon by Jensine Eckwall
Okay, so I know that the idea of using food as a metaphor for love and a table as a metaphor for unity in storytelling is an old one. It’s been done a lot and hey, we Americans even have a whole holiday centered around it. ( You know…Thanksgiving!) However, it is a metaphor that is so beautiful that I don’t care how many times it get’s done. Also, in my humble opinion, this is one of the most gorgeous and lovely forms I have ever seen it in.
This book really is centered around the whole metaphor. A boy and his grandmother make some soup and invite everyone they know to come and share it. That’s it really. The magic, in addition to the afore mentioned beautiful metaphor, is in the illustrations and the text. The text uses a wonderful rambling rhythm that is perfect for reading aloud and utilizes thought out rhyme. It is the type of story that has a nice slow, old-timey, comforting, sit-by-the-fire, kinda feel to it.
Then there are the illustrations! They are earthy with a folk tale feel to them. I love the diversity included int the people that are invited in to share the soup as well. It adds to the depth of the metaphor and gives a feeling of overall peace. It is one that is out to make a difference. My favorite line is “No one is different and everyone’s alone.”
