Every year when fall approaches I get so excited! Fall means boots, scarves, cozy sweaters, fires in the fireplace, beautiful leaves, amazing smells and harvest. And harvest includes one of my favorite fruits: apples. These are two new release books that celebrate apples and are our two favorite apple books right now. They are each wonderful in their own way.
Apples and Robins by Lucie Felix
This book has very little text and what is there is very simple. It is meant to guide you through what makes this book really special: the cut-outs. This book uses cut-outs on a whole new level! Almost every page spread utilizes a cut-out to transform some seemingly random geometric shapes into a picture. For example, a stack of rectangles will become a ladder when you turn the next page with a perfectly placed, tall rectangle cut-out that is meant to frame the illustration. This makes turning each page a fun surprise and joy.

Toto’s Apple by Mathieu Lavoie
This book is endearing, humorous, and all-out fun! It has an illustration style similar to “Apples and Robins” (without the cut-outs) and also has very little text. What makes this book special is the little protagonist: a worm named Toto. Toto has his eye on an apple and wants it more than anything in the world. However, there are a few obstacles he has to overcome to get it. That in no way discourages this little optimistic worm and he comes up with creative idea after creative idea to get to it. He is a great example of persistence and his brilliant ideas are sure to make readers old and young smile. I know that I love him. Also, it has a hilarious surprise ending that will have you wanting to read it again and again.
