“Back to School With Mac” by Kim DiLoreto and Alvina Kwong and Tradition
We are in love with Mac! He is a little stuffed apple friend that shows up in your home every year at the very end of summer. When he visits his main focus is to herald in the new school year and help your child transition from summertime to school. He does this through a fun celebration that is completely directed and created by you, the parent. Don’t worry, it is super easy and sounds like tons of fun.
To start he comes with a book that introduces him and his purpose to you and your kids. He talks about how he is visiting to have some fun with them and help prepare them for the school year. In the book are some ideas on what you can do with Mac to prepare. They include taking him on some fun activities, mischievous acts possibly performed by him during the night having him leave small gifts/treats to be found in the morning, or even leaving surprise school supply items in your child’s backpack. (Everything facilitated by you of course!) The illustrations are adorable and the text does a good job at building excitement and explaining everything.
I just love the whole concept of Mac and his accompanying tradition so when Little Pumpkin Press asked me if I would like a set I was thrilled! My little guy is starting preschool this fall and a back-to-school tradition like this one seems like just the thing to help get him excited and mentally prepare. Basically, a visit from Mac couldn’t be more timely or welcome!
When I first introduced Mac to my toddler his eyes lit up and he was in love. I think his favorite part is most definitely Mac’s backpack. He just gets the biggest kick out of an apple wearing one and he is also totally obsessed with the one we got him for preschool. Backpacks are simply all the rage! My favorite part about Mac’s backpack is that it opens up. I plan on writing little messages from “Mac” to my toddler in preparation for the school year. Maybe with invitations to end of summer activities or clues to where treats may be hidden.
The book was a perfect pairing for Mac in our opinion. My little guy loved reading it with me and I feel that he has a good grasp on what Mac is for and what the tradition will be. Of course, he will understand and love it all even better when we start at the end of August before September. We are definitely going to be giving this tradition a try.
One last note is I love how open and flexible the tradition is and how the author really leaves it up to you to customize Mac’s visit for your family. When you start, how long you do it for, how often Mac’s “magic” is displayed and what exactly he does is really all up to you. I really appreciate that because some years our back-to-school time may be more hectic than others.
Here is the link to purchase a Back To School With Mac book and toy set if this is something you are interested in doing. In my personal opinion, I couldn’t recommend it more. Seriously, your kiddos are bound to be as infatuated with him as mine already is.
