“Bagel In Love” by Natasha Wing and Helen Dardik
We are major “sweet tooth” people over here. Cupcakes, brownies, ice cream, chocolate, we love it all. That might be why we have a bit of an affinity to books like this one that feature tasty treats. Plus, illustrations that look as adorable as icing decorations are just wonderful, don’t you agree?!
This is the story about a bagel who loves to dance and wants to enter a local dancing competition. However, he is having a hard time finding a partner. Everyone is turning him down and a few are even rude. Poor bagel has just about given-up when he finally meets the partner of his dreams, dances to his hearts content and falls in love. This story is SO cute! The illustration safe bright and so sweet and the story includes some really fun food puns.

Book Inspired Snack Idea
My kids and I get the biggest kick out of illustrations that show food with faces and this book is no exception. It made me think of our obsession with craft wiggly eyes and how you can put them on almost anything and when you do it makes that object a million times more fun. So, after reading this book, I figured “why not put candy eyes on various sweets?!” It just makes sense right?! So I picked up some candy eyes and some pre made, individually wrapped boxed treats and combined them. The result is just like wiggly eyes: magic! Plus, they are edible!
Ingredients:
- candy/icing eyes (I used THESE from Wilton)
- pre-made frosting or icing
- selection of baked treats (mini doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes…)
Process:
- Use frosting to adhere icing eyes to the location of your choice on the baked good of your choice. That’s it!
It seriously doesn’t get much cuter or easier than these fun snacks and they make such a darling companion to the story. It had me thinking they would be fabulous for a Valentine’s Day party or any year-round story time snack and book session. It also helps that you can prepare a bunch of them in just minutes to accommodate a large group if you want. Let the fun commence!
