“The Story of the Leprechaun” by Katherine Teen and Sally Anne Lambert
This charming little book is perfect for introducing leprechauns and the folklore involving them to children! It tells the story of a leprechaun who makes shoes for people and fairies (of course!) and why he decided to hide his gold at the end of the rainbow. As expected, there is a little bit of good-hearted trickiness involved and it is so much fun to read. Plus, the illustrations are so cute!

Leprechaun Masks
Ever since I made these gnome masks for “Go Big or Go Gnome” I have been wanting to use the same template for leprechaun masks. I have simply been waiting for the perfect book to share them with. When I first read “The Story of the Leprechaun” I got really excited because I knew it was the perfect book to pair with these masks. That way, after learning about the legend of leprechauns, children can pretend to be leprechauns themselves! Story time perfection if you ask me.
They are super simple to make (just taking a few minutes and using supplies you may already have on hand) and are so much fun to play with afterwards. I hope you and your little leprechauns enjoy them for a little St. Patrick’s Day fun!
Supplies:
- standard white paper plate
- jumbo wooden craft stick
- glue stick
- scissors
- Beard Template
- Hat Template
- clear packing tape
Process:
- Cut the center of the plate out to create a hollow circle in the middle.
- Print out the hat and beard template then, using scissors, cut them out. I would suggest printing the hat directly onto green construction paper and the beard onto orange.
- Using a strong gluestick (or other type of glue), glue the hat and beard onto the cut paper plate leaving an opening for your child’s eyes and nose to show through.
- After the glue has dried, use clear packing tape to tape the large craft stick to the back of your plate. Put it low enough near the bottom that the bottom of the stick pokes out just below the beard for little hands to grasp.
