“Poppy, Buttercup, Bluebell and Dandy” by Fiona Woodcock
I just adore Fiona’s work so I have been anticipating the release of this book for a while now. Boy did it live up to my expectations! It is about a group of flower friends that possess the power to spread nature’s beauty everywhere they go. In this short, but profound, story they ride around on their skateboards and bring some beautiful nature to an urban area covered in concrete. It is the perfect book to start a discussion on environmentalism and taking care of Mother Earth.
The illustrations are also completely noteworthy! Fiona uses a lot of gray and black to represent the urban area, however the nature that the blooms spread, and the blooms themselves, are created in the most vibrant and stunning colors. The ending is particularly spectacular as it resembles a “color explosion” as the flowers unleash their powers and beautify things. It is a definite stunner!

Flower Girl Craft
One of my favorite parts of this book are the flower girls themselves. They look absolutely darling with their flower adornments and clothing and I couldn’t help but give it a try! This craft is super easy and takes only a few art supplies that are so easy to come by. Also, the results are so rewarding and so much fun!
Supplies:
- pressed leaves and flowers
- glue stick
- cardstock
- black marker
Process:
- Your first step is to gather (or purchase) some leaves and flowers and press them in preparation for the craft. We used an inexpensive bouquet from the store (because we are still covered in snow over here right now) and pressed the flowers in heavy books. (But of course!)
- Once your flowers are pressed and dry you are ready to go! I recommend using card stock because you will want something sturdier than copy paper for gluing your flowers.
- Next, place some flower and leaf combinations on your paper to make the bodices and headpieces for your flower girls. When you have them the way you would like glue them on your paper. Then draw the heads, arms and legs on. I used a pencil first then went over it later with a black sharpie.
- Add any other details or leaves that you would like and your done!
This craft was so much fun to make and I hope that you have just as much fun making them with your kiddos! If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes!
