Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak
Don’t you just love the changing of the seasons? The transition from summer to fall is my absolute favorite and this is a book that highlights and celebrates just that. The story is really simple as it is about a little girl who goes on a walk the last day of summer through the forest, her city, and her community. As she walks she is joined by a few animal friends and she pleasantly greets everything beautiful around her. It greets her back and together they have short, but sweet exchanges about the coming-on of fall. Such a lovely idea. The illustrations along with the book are also absolutely stunning
When I read this I thought about how much my little guy loves to go on nature walks and how he, like the little girl in the book, notices everything beautiful around him. It also makes my heart happy how he, like the little girl, greets his favorite discoveries. They usually aren’t able to talk back, but he doesn’t seem to mind. He also has a passion for collecting little treasures that he finds such as rocks and leaves that catch his eye. He likes to carry them around with him and always wants to bring them home.
That got me thinking that a scavenger hunt would be just the perfect companion activity for this book and for kids who, like mine and the girl in the story, love nature walks and finding little treasures. I made a printable that you can cut out and glue onto a paper lunch sack to take with you on a nature walk. Perfect for this time of year right? I tried to keep it super simple so toddlers as well as older children can enjoy it. That is also why I put pictures next to the items and color in the circles, for all the little pre-readers. It is simple and sweet and should be fun to guide observations on your adventure and I also think it is just a nice idea to take along a special little bag to hold all the treasures they find, whether on the list or not. This would also be a great activity for lessons on nature and seasons.
