Imelda & The Goblin King by Briony May Smith
I love classic fairytales. For some reason the pure hearted hero against he horrible villain never gets old. I love how the story lines exemplify good and bad in such a bold manner and I love the feeling of nostalgia that surrounds them. True, they don’t always have happy endings (which are my personal favorite by far), but you cannot deny they are entertaining. However much I love the old classics, I love when a new fairytale comes along that has the same feel about it. That is how I feel about this book.
It is about a kind and generous little girl named Imelda who is full of charity and is friends with the fairy folk. One day the goblin king comes marching into the fairies’ forest and claims it for his own. He is anything but kind. He is selfish, mean, and completely unfair. The fairy queen tries to win him over with kindness, but to no avail. Things hit the low point when the goblin king captures the fairy queen. Imelda and the fairies have a council to determine what is to be done and brave Imelda comes up with the perfect plan. One that gives the goblin king the chance to do right, or face a consequence. (The consequence is quite humorous by the way, not at all too scary.)
I really enjoy this book. As I mentioned, I love the old fairytale feel and I love that it has a happy ending. I love how brave and kind Imelda is, making her a good little role-model for children. I love that they take a stand against a great bully and last, but not least, I LOVE the illustrations! They are absolutely beautiful and completely have my heart. Check this one out, you won’t regret it!
