“I Know Numbers!” by Taro Gomi
Perhaps my favorite thing about Taro’s work is that his illustrations are so simple, and yet so striking. The colors are bold, the lines are clean, and each one is so much fun to look at. This is one of his newest releases and the focus is all on numbers. Each page points out various places in our everyday lives that numbers are found. Everything is mentioned from the scale to scoreboards.
I love that in a market saturated with number books for children, Taro put a refreshing and different spin on the concept of numbers. It is definitely a great one for little bookworms and I know that I enjoy reading it as well.

Number Scavenger Hunt
This book introduces the concept to children that numbers are found absolutely everywhere. The variety of places found in this book for numbers is broad, however there are many more places that numbers can be found. Also, wouldn’t it be a great extension acidity for very young bookworms to find their own? I think so too! That is why I created this Number Scavenger Hunt.
The main idea is that after reading the book to the kiddos in your life, you invite them to spend some time looking for numbers in the world around them. Especially ones they come across everyday. Then invite them to record their findings. Below you will find printables (Free for personal and educational use.) that are perfect for such recording.
Because this activity is for the very youngest of bookworms, I have three options for the printables to accommodate different ages/levels. One allows for copying the numbers the child finds, one for drawing a picture, and one for both drawing and copying. I think this activity would especially be fun with a group of children where they can meet together again and all share the various places that they found numbers.
Scavenger Hunt Sheet (Drawing):draw numbers
Scavenger Hunt Sheet (Drawing and Writing): write and draw numbers
Scavenger Hunt Sheet (Writing): copy numbers
If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes! Share it on Instagram using hashtag #beyondthebook (I’m on Instagram as @book.nerd.mommy) or even just comment here with your thoughts. It would make my day!
