“Mary Poppins Up, Up and Away” by Helene Druvert
When I was a child I was enamored by Mary Poppins. She made medicine tasty, sang and danced, had a bottomless bag full of suprises and wisked children away on wonderful adventures. Her story was magical and that story still carries some magic for me today. It is an encapsulation of the wonder of childhood.
This new book that features our beloved Mary is one that really capures that same magic and wonder. The text takes you through a day with the famous nanny, which is splendid on its own, but the real beauty lies in the illustrations and paperwork. Every other page of this book is a black paper that is illustrated soley by cut outs and silhouettes. They are absolutely stunning in their tiny cut-out details and lacey appearance.
However, the effect doesn’t stop there. Each cut-out page makes the perfect overlay for the minimalist style illustrated pages on each side. Making the silhouette cut-out page a kind of window. That makes this book a truly unique experience and an absolute masterpiece.
