“Mo just got a mustache. A big, black, beautiful mustache.”
Mo’s Mustache by Ben Clanton
It is common for children to struggle with wanting to fit in. Peer pressure can be strong and they may feel like being a part of the crowd is the way to go. It can be hard to persuade children to embrace their differences, let alone strive to be unique. This is a book that addresses these issues in a simple, relatable, even humorous way.
It is about a little monster named Mo who marches to the beat of his own drum. He embraces who he is and loves being unique. At the beginning of the book he is excited and proud because he just got a new mustache to wear around. However, to his dismay, it isn’t long before all of his friends are sporting mustaches too. He is upset, but not completely deterred, as he decides to ditch the mustache and go with a beautiful striped sweater. Only, he is shocked to find the same thing happened again! Outraged he demands an explanation only to find that his friends are copying him as a compliment to his style. He isn’t so upset anymore upon learning this, in fact he is quite flattered. However, they host a fashion show at the end where they can all be fashion icons of their own.
I love how all of this is achieved in very little text. Ben uses masterfully fun but simple text and illustrations to make his big points. Children will laugh and giggle at all of the dramatic emotion portrayed by Mo and his adorable friends and I think it is one that can quickly become a book that is high-in-demand at story time each day.
