“Mother Fox and Her Cubs” by Amandine Momenceau
I love it when authors can take the very style and format of a book and turn it on it’s head to make something new and refreshing. That is what this book feels like to me. It is so incredibly clever. It is the story of a mother fox looking for her cubs. In the end she finds them and they go home to sleep in their den. That is it. The real magic is in the format with which she tells the story.
Each page utilizes cut outs and split pages to bring to life the mother foxes search. For example, on page spread will show her looking for her cubs, with none in sight. Then you turn the part of the page with the illustration of the mother to essentially look behind her and there are the cubs. Amandine even illustrated the back side of the fox for when you flip the page over! Ingenius right?
The illustrations are minimalistic with a limited color palate and really add to the feel of the story. Children will delight in the cute cubs as well as seeing the “whole picture” and feeling like they have joined the mother fox on her hunt. Seriously, one to check out!
