“Over the River and Through the Wood” by Linda Ashman and Kim Smith
“Over the River and Through the Wood” is a traditional Thanksgiving song that I adored as a child. We used to sing it in our mini van as we headed off to my grandparents for our Thanksgiving Day celebration. This is a book that gives a nice tribute to the traditional song, but with a modern twist and it’s own little story.
It starts with a letter from grandma and grandpa to their children and grandchildren to come to their house for the Holiday dinner celebration. Each family sets off in a different mode of transportation with their favorite pie and soon experiences difficulty along the way. Tires go flat, rental cars are sold out, and all sorts of problems. However, to everyones delight, a horse drawn sleigh comes to the rescue and they all share the ride to arrive safely at their grandparents house to celebrate.
I love that this book gives a nod to traditions, yet also is modern and fresh. The illustrations are bright, fun and all around fantastic. I have a feeling this will be a favorite Thanksgiving book in our house for years to come.
