“The Little Ice Cream Truck” by Margery Coyler and Bob Kolan
To me ice cream trucks are a symbol of happiness. I cannot hear one, or even think about one, without the corners of my mouth turning up. When I was a child we had one that would come around every summer and it was always greeted by excited children and its music was always welcome.
This book captures that joy. It tells about a little ice cream truck and where it goes to make it’s deliveries and even how it can be rented out for parties. My favorite elements of this book are the bright, clean illustrations and all the happy faces on each and every page. Every time I read it with my kids it has them (and even me) craving an ice cream treat. Love it!

Popsicle Craft
As much as I would like to give my kids ice cream ever single time we read this, I don’t think that is the best idea. So, we thought it would be fun to make some everlasting ice treats in craft form. Some of the treats featured in the text and illustrations of this book are popsicles. I thought those would be extra fun to make because we could use craft sticks to make some pretend play ones. We covered them in bling and sparkle to make them look like even more a celebration and extra-super yummy. They were SO much fun!
Supplies
- craft foam sheets (we used some from a 5X7 pack)
- craft glue
- hot glue and hot glue gun
- large craft sticks (we jumbo sized for the singles and a medium size for the doubles)
- sequins, glitter, bling, small pom poms and any other decorations
Process:
- Cut out the basic shapes of single and double popsicles. We used 5×7 sheets of foam and just trimmed them to the desired shape. Then glue jumbo craft sticks to the back. Go all the way along the back for extra structure and use a strong glue like hot glue to ensure that it is secure.
- Here is what they look like in the front. I did these steps first and then turned them over to my kids for decorating.
- Decorate your popsicles with glitter, pom poms and any other decorations of your choice.
Aren’t they just the cutest?! We think the bling decorations look like sprinkles and a fantastic celebration. They were such a blast to make and we hope that you have just as much fun making yours!
