Red Socks Go With Absolutely Anything by Darla Woodley and Evan Munday
Did you ever have a “lucky item” growing up that you kept with you to give you confidence? Or did you associate certain songs or smells with the love of someone close to you heart that strengthened you? Or do you fondly think of someone special every time you see a certain type of item? I think a lot of us are that way. It may even just be a part of human nature. We dedicate songs to each other and associate smells, tastes, songs and items with those important to us all the time. For example, I think of my grandmother every time I see an antique store and my husband and I have several songs that are sentimental to us.
This book is a celebration of that. It is about a boy whose mother always wore red socks. She claimed they could “go with anything”. The book takes you through small snapshots of critical moments in his life where he was nervous or afraid and his mother was there to support and encourage him. What stands out in his memory is the empowering feeling her got from her love and that she was always wearing red socks. This socks came to symbolize her faith in him and all the relationship they shared together.
This is such a sentimental and sweet book. I love how it takes you on a journey from his childhood through manhood. I also enjoy the fact that all the illustrations and text are black and white with the exception of the socks in the illustrations and the text “red socks” being red. So clever! I think this one would make a great gift of encouragement or remembrance as it can easily be applied to many special relationships in our own lives.
