I get a little heart crazy around Valentine’s Day and can’t get enough from heart shaped everything! Heart shaped candies, garlands, cards and even heart shaped place mats! They are just so happy looking and evoke so many feelings of love and joy. That is why heart shaped cookies often feel like a must for that time of year.
But, you know what? My love for heart shaped cookies doesn’t really die down after Valentine’s Day like my love for heart shaped place mats and everything else does. I think it is because baked goods, like cookies, are one of my favorite ways to send love to someone and if you couple that with cookies in a heart form it feels magical. I mean, c’mon, wouldn’t you feel loved if someone baked you up a batch of heart shaped cookies?!

I have been thinking about making a recipe for heart shaped cut-out cookies for a while now, but just hadn’t settled on what kind. Then I got the idea to make them in red velvet style and it clicked! Red Velvet is another flavor strongly associated with Valentine’s Day and love and it just makes sense to pair it with a cookie! Plus, the maroon color really helps the white, royal icing to stand out and look positively beautiful.
That is when this recipe was created. I am so pleased with the results and am excited to share them with you These cookies are firm enough that they hold their shape exactly and are perfect for dunking (Hello, glass of milk!) while still being soft enough to please my soft cookie preferences. I even love the slightly crinkled texture on top that gives them that little something extra. Plus, the dough for these cookies is heavenly! So smooth and velvety and easy to work with! Give them a try, you’re bound to love them!
One of the ingredients that makes these cookies so special is the Red Velvet Emulsion. It gives them the perfect red velvet flavor! You can find Red Velvet Emulsion in stores, but if you’re having difficulty finding it, or want a recommendation, here is the link to the one that I used.
