“Square” by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen
We loved “Triangle” so much that I was so excited to read Square and could hardly wait to get ahold of it. It is every bit as clever and witty as its predecessor and I love it! In this story square is going about his daily task of pushing square blocks up the hill when Circle floats by and mistakes them for his sculptures. Excited, she requests that Square makes her one of her own image. Befuddled, Square agrees only to find himself caught in a predicament because he doesn’t actually know how to sculpt.
The ending is one that will have readers young and old chuckling in delight and will also have them begging for it to be read again and again. With this book, I really don’t mind that. I will gladly read it again and again.

Craft Inspired by “Square”
We are such fans of these shapes that we just had to make our own square. It seriously couldn’t have been any easier and the end result is bound to make you smile every time you see it. With these shape characters it is obviously all about the eyes and wiggly eyes seemed to do the trick. They are especially fun because you can even slide them around from side to side to mimic the movement of the eyes in the illustrations of this book. Now we just need to get ahold of a wooden circle and triangle to finish our trio….
Supplies:
- glue
- paint brush
- 2 wiggly eyes
- wooden block
- black acrylic paint
- paper plate for paint
Process:
- Paint your wooden block black and set aside to dry.
- When it’s dry, glue two wiggly eyes in the center.
- Done! Seriously, too easy right?!
