Hey there! I am Book Nerd Mommy and I am so glad you are here! I have been an avid book nerd for as long as I can remember. As a small child I was constantly maxing out my library card and when I had read my huge stack of library books I would proceed to read the library books that my siblings had checked out. I could often be found contentedly reading in my Beauty and the Beast tent surrounded by my stuffed animals or up in my favorite tree with my nose in a book. Once I was a bit older I discovered the joy of writing and began writing short stories in my spare time. I loved English class in school and when my teacher assigned us a three page story to write, I would be thrilled and then eagerly submit a fourteen page composition.
I loved reading and writing so much that it was one of my main motivations for becoming an elementary school teacher. Once I completed my education and certification I became one and my favorite thing to teach was writing and my favorite part of the day was when I got to read aloud to my students. (I definitely was someone who “did all the voices.”) When I became a mother I switched from public teaching to teaching my children at home. As a teacher I believe that I had an impact in instilling a love for learning and reading in my students and as a mother I believe that I have an influence in instilling a love for reading with my children.
My goal here at Book Nerd Mommy is to help provide you with resources to make encouraging reading with the children in your life (whether at home, as a teacher, or in a different setting) even easier and more fun. Here I share book lists to help you find books on the topics or interests that you are looking for as well as “beyond the book” ideas to help you celebrate reading such as crafts, snacks and activities. (All of which are inspired by books.) I also share tips categorized by age to help you raise readers. (Even ones that are reluctant.) My hope is that I can help you you and your littles develop a deeper love of reading while creating memories together.
