“Twig” by Aura Parker
It is the first day of bug school and Heidi is a brand new student. Bug school turns out to be a wonderful place with friendly bugs and fun projects, but there is just one problem. Because Heidi is a stick bug her camouflage is too good and she finds herself being overlooked and left out. After she is finally spotted the other bugs come up with a happy idea of giving her a colorful scarf so she is easy to spot from then on out.
This book is positively darling! The illustrations are absolutely stunning with their joyful colors and lovely little details and the story is extra sweet. It is one that we will read again and again and again.

Stick Person Craft
Heidi is such a delightful character that we thought it would be fun to grab some sticks and make our own stick person inspired by her. They took less than 5 minutes to make and just a few supplies and the end result is so cute. They make perfect pretend play characters to retell the story with or to invent new stories of your own. We even tied a bright string around them so they are never too hard to spot just like how Heidi had her colorful scarf at the end of the book. One of the best parts is that you can grab a twig from around your house for the project! So easy! Even if you don’t have a twig or stick on hand, craft sticks make a wonderful substitute.
Supplies:
- Stick (Thick enough to glue wiggly eyes on. You can substitute it with a craft stick instead.)
- 1 Black or brown pipe cleaner
- 2 wiggly eyes
- black Sharpie
- red and white striped bakers twine or colorful ribbon
- glue
Process:
- Glue the wiggly eyes on the top of the stick.
- With your Sharpie draw a smile under the eyes.
- Tie a piece of baker’s twine around the stick under the mouth to be a “scarf”.
- Cut your pipe cleaner in half and twist one half under the scarf to make two arms on your stick.
- Twist the second half on towards the bottom of your stick to create legs.
