“In a place where colors ran wild, there lived a girl who was wilder still. Her name was Swatch, and she was a color tamer.”
I love the wonder and curiosity my children hold for the world. They notice every tiny little detail and observe it with such a freshness and openness. They are eager to accept and love it all and find so many things I take for granted exciting. That is the feel of Swatch: The Girl Who Loved Color for me.
In this book the colors are very abstract, but live entities. They are wild, vivid, and free. Swatch, is a little girl who adores them. She celebrates their many hues and moods. The colors love her and she loves them. Then, one day she decides that she wants to collect them and keep them in jars to admire whenever she pleases. It seemed like such a grand idea until she discovers that the Yellowest Yellow doesn’t wish to be collected. She respects it’s wish and in return the colors let her ride them up into the sky in a colorful burst. It is then that Swatch understands what it means to be wildly free.
This book is so special for so many reasons. The message about what it means to be wildly free and to be considerate of others is beautiful and done in a way that children can understand. The book is filled with bright, water color-style images that are bold and captivating. It is one that we will read over and over again and I have a feeling that Swatch will become a good friend of ours.
