The Bear Who Wasn’t There by LeUyen Pham
This book is one gigantic silly party! The cover sets the tone perfectly. There is a missing bear, and a duck that sneakily informs you that the bear never shows up! Then when you start the story you are introduced to a clever and very determined duck who is out on a serious mission to be the star of the book on behalf of all ducks everywhere. Besides, he reasons, there are all ready too many bear books out there.
The real fun is that the duck is talking directly to you, the reader, and begins to “assist” you on a tour of the book in “search” of the missing bear. As you turn each page you meet new characters in the book, all who talk to you as well. And their favorite topic, of course, is the missing bear. Each page is a surprise as you even get to catch a few animals by surprise. Littles will get a big kick out of accidentally turning the page on a giraffe on the toilet who is shocked at the sudden lack of privacy!
It all has a very “back-stage” feel to it and the real fun begins when the author character shows up and is determined to help find the bear because she swears she remembers illustrating one. Do they ever find one? Is there a bear in the book? You will have to read it this fall and find out!
If you want to read a book that will have your little in giggles and one that is sure to entertain, then this is the one for you. The illustrations are quirky and fun with talk bubbles for the animals and a sense of humor that is definitely a winner.
