The Bus Ride by Marianne Dubuc
Childhood celebrates the small and simple things in life and I love that. I love how a walk at the park can be magical, how a ladybug can be the most fascinating thing on the planet, and how a helium balloon can bring forth the biggest smiles. My kids keep my perspective fresh and remind me of the daily beauty I tend to take for granted. This book is by Marianne Dubuc, who seems to have a knack for treasuring this outlook in book form.
“The Bus Ride” is about just that, a bus ride. It starts where a little girl gets on an approaching bus to go visit her grandmother and ends with her getting off to greet her grandmother. Nothing, by way of the world, to spectacular happens on the bus ride and the text is simple. This, in my opinion, makes it charming and delightful.
I love the format of this book. It is long and thin so that the page spreads show the whole length and interior of the bus. Brilliant! This way story is told in a dance between the simple text and the more detailed illustrations. In fact, the illustrations do such a fabulous job that the text almost feels more like subtitles. It is a unique little gem of a book that is worth looking up if you haven’t already.
