Change is a funny thing. Sometimes children welcome it, even to the point where they crave it. For example, my little guy wants to grow up way too fast, he is eager to do things that he sees other kids doing and wants to get started right away. However, sometimes children are hesitant. Change can be intimidating, especially when you don’t know in advance exactly what the outcome is going to be. These two books are great for encouraging the explorative and creative side of children that sometimes they may be reluctant to try out.
The Cow Who Climbed a Tree by Gemma Merino
This is an adorable story about a little cow who isn’t content to just do the same thing everyday and wonders what is out beyond the field where she and her sisters graze. She explores beyond and finds a fascinating forest and even makes a dragon friend. Her sisters all tease her as she heads out each day and say there is no such thing as dragons, however eventually they are curious enough about what she is doing that they head out to follow her. To their surprise, they find the world beyond the pasture just as amazing as their sister and decide that change and exploration may just be a good thing after all.
I love how this book can encourage kiddos to go/think “outside the box”. There is a lot of wonderful world to discover and experience. It can be something as simple as encouraging you child to try something new to eat as well as trying something new such as riding a bike. It is such a sweet story and the illustrations are bright and fun.

Panda Pants by Jacqueline Davies and Sydney Hanson
This book is SO cute! It is about a little panda who’s heart’s desire is to wear pants. His momma keeps trying to tell him that he can’t because pandas simply don’t wear pants and he doesn’t need pants. This cute little guy is persistent and their exchange back and forth is adorable. He eventually finds some pants on a scarecrow and is absolutely delighted. However, when they run into a spot of trouble shortly thereafter he is inventive and finds a new purpose for his pants that help them in their troubles.
I love how this book can teach that being unique and trying new things is a great thing. There can even be surprise results that are fantastic and exciting. This little panda wasn’t afraid to be unique and he definitely “thought outside the box” when he was inventive with his pair of pants. Even the other animals were impressed! Such an adorable story and the expressions on the pandas in the illustrations are precious.
