The Lines on Nana’s Face by Simona Ciraolo
Old age is something that can be very difficult for the very young to understand. They may have some questions. Not just about death, but possibly about wrinkles, gray hair, balding and a million other things. (If your children are like mine they ask tons of questions about absolutely everything!) This is a sweet book that addresses old age with a cute explanation (non scientific, sure, but oh-so-sweet) about wrinkles. Simona has a real knack for being able to tackle tough subjects in picture books, and she does it in such a pleasant and endearing way.
This one is all about a little girl who is confused about the wrinkles on her Nana’s face. She inquires after them and her Nana explains that her wrinkles are where she keeps her memories. They have a lovely bonding experience as her Nana proceeds to tell her about multiple, beautiful memories that she has in her wrinkles. A couple of her memories are illustrated in gorgeous two page spreads and they had me smiling. The memories she shares are rich in variety and include a spectrum of emotions. Coupled with the fantastic illustrations, they make this book extra special and one that will have you thinking of your loved ones as well as the wonderful life you have lived.
In this way, it’s a kind of tribute to family everywhere that can become very personal for the reader even though Nana is someone fictional. I know that I couldn’t stop thinking about my own grandmother as I read this book. It was so nice to have a reminder of what a beautiful person she is and was. I miss her so much, but my memories of her celebrate her life just as this book celebrates life through memories. Such a good one, I can’t wait to see what Simona comes up with next!
