The Marvelous Thing that Came From a Spring by Gilbert Ford
Did you watch Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood as a kid? I did and I LOVED it! My favorite features that the show would do were of factories where they would show how things were made. It is and was fascinating to me how much work goes into the manufacturing and distribution of a simple pencil with an eraser. I guess I’m just curious and that is something that I have never grown out of. Children are notorious for being curious and books are my favorite medium for satiating their curiosity. This book reminds me of the factory segments I loved so much as a child because it goes behind-the-scenes into the history of one of America’s most beloved toys.
What toy you may ask? Why, the slinky of course! The “accidental invention of the toy that swept the nation”. Did you know that the invention of the slinky was accidental? I didn’t! And it makes for a great story! Not only does Richard James’ story about creating and distributing slinky’s inform children about a lovely little bit of history, but James is an excellent example of perseverance and confidence. The book explains how he had a rough time getting toy stores to take him seriously in the beginning, but he didn’t give up until the entire nation was swept up in his vision.
The illustrations in this book are fabulous and unique. They have a very vintage feel to them that suits the setting of the story. I love the collage technique used to create a two dimensional yet three dimensional feel. Also there is a definite quirky feel to them that I love combined with the most fabulous facial expressions! You know I love a good facial expression and this book is full of them! Check it out!
