“Walking in a Winter Wonderland” by Peggy Lee and Tim Hopgood
I have mentioned before that I love it when illustrator turn beloved songs into picture books. This is especially because I love the opportunity it gives me to sing to my kiddos. They don’t always have the patience to sit and let me sing them songs, but if there is a beautiful book accompanying it they usually will! This book is the lyrics to “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” illustrated with bright modern illustrations. They are absolutely wonderful and one of my favorite parts is the snowflakes. Some are round dots of white while the others are intricate and look, to me, just like paper snowflakes.

As I mentioned, some of the snowflakes made me think of paper snowflakes so I thought this would be the perfect book to accompany some annual paper snowflake creating! And, if your like me and need a reminder ever time before you start, I included a photo of the classic steps below. You know what would make the experience even more fun? Playing the song “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” in the background. Yup, epic!
Supplies:
- scissors
- standard white copy paper
Steps:
- Fold one of your corners up flush to the opposite side and cut the remaining exposed strip to make a square.
- Leaving your original fold, fold your triangle again along the crease shown.
- Now fold the left side and the right side of the triangle in to meet in the middle. (Like double doors.) See how it will look after the folds in step four.
- This is how it will look after you fold them both in.
- Flip it over and cut off the exposed flap at the top. (Opposite end of the point.)
- Here is what it looks like after it is cut.
- Now fold at the crease where the flaps meet to make a closed triangle again.
- Cut along the edges however you choose. Just make sure to leave enough connecting edges along the folds.
- Unfold your snowflake masterpiece!
Making these is just as fun every year as it was the year before. I swear it will never get old! If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes! Share it on Instagram using hashtag #beyondthebook (I’m on Instagram as @book.nerd.mommy) or even just comment here with your thoughts. It would make my day!
