“Perfectly Norman” by Tom Percival
Norman was perfectly normal until the day that he suddenly grew wings. At first, he absolutely loved them, but then he was worried what others would think and decided to hide them under coats. Hiding them made him miserable until he finally had the courage to let them out and when he did his act inspired other children with wings to take flight.
This book is phenomenal! The bright and vivid illustrations are fantastic and the story is so relatable in such a beautiful way. I love how Norman’s act of bravery inspired others and feel that children will find it so empowering. We all have uniqueness to offer the world and we need to let our colors shine. This is such a special book!

DIY Wing Mural Collage
Of course after reading this kids will wish they had a pair of rainbow wings of their own! Who wouldn’t right?! That is why we decided to make some of our own. We took inspiration from the neon colors in the book and used a roll of large craft paper to make them extra big so they could be more proportionate. My kids had so much fun making them and were so excited to get their photo in front of them. When they saw their photos and the illusions of themselves having wings, they were ecstatic. Such a fun craft!
Supplies:
- large roll of white craft paper (any size really, but small ones will limit the size of your wings obviously)
- construction paper in various bright colors
- tissue paper in various bright colors
- neon craft feathers
- glue stick
- pencil or thin marker
- scissors
- paint grade tape
Process:
- Roll out your cart paper to your desired length and cut it off. Using paint grade tape, tape it to your wall. Using a child as reference, lightly sketch the outline of the wings that you would like.
- Cut almond, feather shapes out of your construction paper and tissue paper. Mine were just bigger than the palm of my hand.
- Glue the construction paper “feathers”, tissue paper “feathers” and neon craft feathers inside the outline of your wings. Overlap and layer them for a fun collage.
- Your done!
We hope you find these wings just as magical as we do and we hope that they inspire your kids to live their dreams and be true to themselves.
