This post is done in partnership with Netflix Film
Just over a year ago I had the opportunity to visit the set of the new Netflix Original film “Yes Day” starring Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez. The film is based off of the picture book “Yes Day!” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal so of course I leapt at the opportunity to go. I love the concept of movies being based off of picture books. So often we see films being made for middle grade, young adult and adult novels, but films based on picture books are, as of now, few and far between. However, being the obvious picture book enthusiast that I am, I feel that there is a lot of missed opportunity in that department. Picture books can really pack a lot of story in their limited pages and leave so much more “story” off the page even that is just waiting to be told.
The book “Yes Day!” introduces the idea of having a fun day with your children where you say “yes” as much as possible to things they ask. Jennifer Garner has a tradition of doing “yes days” with her own family and that is part of what sparked the idea for the film. In the movie Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez star as parents who always feel like they are having to say “no” to their children. In a way to have fun with them and bond as a family they decide to do a “yes day” where for 24 hours they will strive to say only “yes” to their kids. The result sounds like heaps fo fun and them coming together as a family like never before.
When I visited the set I was with a group of other influencers who got to go to Magic Mountain in California to watch one of the scenes from the movie being filmed. It was so magical to see a picture book being brought to life in such a wonderful way. While there we also got to walk through the scene as “extras” (I hope I made the final cut!) and even briefly met Jennifer Garner. We had time to ask her a couple questions and I asked if there were any requests in the “yes day” in the film that coincided with the “yes days” that she has done with her family. She said that usually her family ends their “yes days” with a campout so she was happy to see that make the film.
How neat is that! It all started with a picture book that led to fun family traditions of “yes days” that Jennifer Garner participated in that sparked the idea of a movie. What’s not to love?! I am so excited to see the film March 12th and you can bet I’ll be watching with a large tub of popcorn. My only question now is: “What picture book is next?!”
Here is the trailer, check it out!
